Why FIRST?: Because of the challenged posed by the game changing every year. I also have had friends and family who were a part of a team and they said it was an experience they will never forget. Why FIRST?: I’ve always had a passion for robotics and engineering, especially the design aspect of finding a creative way to solve a problem and putting it into action. FIRST robotics was a perfect opportunity for me to learn more about robotics and do what I love. Role: Role: Design, Build What do you want to learn?: What I want to learn: I want to further develop my design ability, in the context of robotics.
Why FIRST?: I joined FIRST because building and designing has always been one of my favourite things to do. Role: Build and Design Team as well as pit crew and human player two for competition. What do you want to learn?: I want learn more about working as a team and the roles required to make a robot come to life.
Why FIRST?: Because I love robots and want to experience many of the situations an engineer would experience. Role: Programming What do you want to learn?: I would like to learn how to develop the knowledge of building and designing a robot.
Why FIRST?: I heard about it in a book a family friend gave me who’d done it, and I got to grade 9 and met some amazing people who made me believe I could do it. Also I have a fascination with all things tech. Role: Programmer and Electrical Team What do you want to learn?: I would like to become a better programmer, learn how to contribute to a multi-person project, and learn more about wiring the robot.
Why FIRST?: I joined FIRST initially due to my interests in programming and technology, and a desire to be a part of a team. I knew FIRST would help me feel as though I was accomplishing something great, and I knew I’d have a great time doing so. Role: Design and Build Team. What do you want to learn?: I want to learn how to manage my time effectively and how to work with others more efficiently, and such a large task was the perfect outlet for that. In terms of STEM, I hope to gain more experience on the programming side of things, but also to further understand the hardware components, given that that’s an area of weakness for me.

Lennon is a team co-captain. His placement as co-captain makes him responsible for the robot and he oversees what the other captains put towards building the robot. He is a responsible captain, but more importantly; he enjoys the work he puts in to the team. This ensures good communication and a pleasant learning environment.
Charlotte is a team co-captain. She handles the many business needs and manages the members of the team. She enjoys taking pictures and videos of the team at our many events and competitions. She is extremely active in updating the team’s social media accounts and website. She also helps write documents and guide the business team to success. She helps plan and coordinate outreach events and helps keep the team’s chaos to a minimum as much as possible.
Dennis is the controls captain. He teaches the new students to code and about electronics. He organized the Hour of Code for the school twice to teach non-robotics students and staff how to code in python. Furthermore, Dennis was the operator on the drive team. His help ensured our success in matches. Dennis is a very cheerful and smiley guy and his enthusiasm is always welcome on the team.
Ben is build captain. He helps organize safety meetings as well as teaches how to use different tools to new members. Ben became captain despite being such younger student through his hard work and dedication. Ben demonstrated his commitment to the team by working for long periods of time in the pits. He is friendly and always tries to keep morale high.
Sana is the business team captain. She works along with the other team captains and takes a leadership position in organizing school events such as Hour of Code events and grade 8 presentations. This is her fourth year taking part in Banting robotics, making her one of the longest team members. She is extremely loud and full of energy. She loves being part of 5870!
Shreya is the media and marketing captain. Through her hard work and dedication she became quickly noticed and was promoted to a captain. She frequently posts and keeps all of our social media accounts organized. Her charisma and fun attitude keep the atmosphere and positive. She is a major asset to the team and does not let her age hold her back.
Gillian is the team manager. She aids the teacher mentor with organization and is a student leader and does any odd job that needs to be done. She is an excellent member of the business team as well and is an essential member to have on the team.
Supervisor & Mentor
Kyle McKay or Mr. McKay
Mr. McKay is the founder of the team as he is responsible for getting the 5 captains involved with FIRST and helping them through their FIRST year at an incubator team. He later led them after their first year to create their own team at their home school, Sir Frederick Banting S.S. . He aids every captain with their duties and sacrifices much of his time to help the team. Without him the team wouldn’t have come to be and no one would have heard of FIRST. Mr. McKay has led a long career in engineering and software. He has built robots, developed websites, acted as leader of a team for many projects and has produced amazing results. Mr. McKay brings the experience and wealth of knowledge of the real world to the team to help them to succeed.
Steven is an alumni of our robotics team. Steven has helped us with many problems this year, through his calm and thoughtful problem-solving. Steven attends Fanshawe College. Steven has been on robotics since the beginning of our team. We appreciate his help, despite his other commitments and time restrictions.
Talia graduated from the team last year. Talia was a strong member of the business and build team last year, and put together all of our videos for Youtube. She enjoys learning and gaining knowledge on the many aspects of robotics and FIRST. She hopes to continue to learn and assist the team.
Cameron was told about FIRST by a friend and was immediately hooked. He uses his skills learned at Western University to help teach our programming team with his knowledge. He is looking forward to experiencing districts and comradery of being on a FIRST Robotics Team.
